I was very lucky as kid watching this great series as every single episode that I saw was a good one, and have seen them all since then a second time plus a multitude of others. I just saw this one again for about the fourth time on MTV - May 19th, 2022. I noticed that Francis De Sales is in this episode who also had a small role as the Deputy District Attorney in the classic film "Psycho" near the end of the movie. Finally, Robert C. Dennis did a great adaptation of this story converting it into a teleplay. I know a few things about him but have never read his books.

He was one of those writers who was hugely popular in his day and very well known, who seems forgotten or semi-forgotten. Maybe the world war had something to do with it. I mean, the changing tastes. I think of Thorne Smith and Robert Benchley as two others whose works, like Marquis, went out of fashion.

A digression. Back to the Hitchcock half-hour: first rate all the way, and very much a tale for grownups. Hitchcock was never a kid or teen friendly show but its episodes did very now and again, and some are more accessible to younger folk than others. This one isn't.john kenrickhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00710666533854296630noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6672923492889685727.post-48133374606752768682015-12-02T09:08:24.466-08:002015-12-02T09:08:24.466-08:00Steve, it sounds like Marquis did not live a very ...Steve, it sounds like Marquis did not live a very happy life. And what was Thurber talking about?

Marquis had a brother die at 20. Both of Marquis's children died young, his son at age 5, his daughter at 13. He was married twice; both wives pre-deceased him. He had a series of strokes that lift him with difficulty walking or speaking. He died of another stroke at 59.

Born to write comedy, I guess.SteveHLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04017186128084713758noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6672923492889685727.post-76422910749530180372015-12-01T21:58:17.215-08:002015-12-01T21:58:17.215-08:00archy and mehitabel (arch couldn't hit "s...archy and mehitabel (arch couldn't hit "shift") were the stars of a series of poems, rather than stories, left on don marquis's typewriter...lovely stuff. When I finish this series at some point in the future I plan to collect all of the entries into a book so that there will be detailed analysis of the Hitchcock shows available for anyone who is interested. In the meantime, It's fun to work on. The only thing I knew about Don Marquis was that he wrote the Archy and Mehitabel stories. The website you included is, as you said, excellent. I have only read part of it but I do intend to go back.

As a not very relevant aside, one of Middleton's performances that I particularly like is in the film A Big Hand for the Little Lady, in which he takes part in another high-stakes poker game.

Once again, thank you for this terrific series. I have started working backward now and am reading some of the Robert Bloch material.SteveHLhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04017186128084713758noreply@blogger.com
