My drugstore, next to the A&P, had a decent newsstand, fed by presumably mobbed-up distribution (certainly Manor Books and Charlton Comics were always in evidence) and did tend to feature a wide, if always spotty, range of titles, from Gold Key and Archie unsurprisingly along with the DC, Marvel, and Charlton titles...and MAD, NATIONAL LAMPOON and the first F&SF I saw, etc.Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6672923492889685727.post-90258790901491426422012-08-28T05:49:50.585-07:002012-08-28T05:49:50.585-07:00Among the bits of the text of the recent collectio...Among the bits of the text of the recent collection THE SINCEREST FORM OF PARODY that caught my eye was that the editor as a kid had roam up and down Haddon Ave, perhaps a quarter-mile away from where I sit at this moment, to gather as many of the early MAD imitators (or other comics) as was possible to find in the mid-'50s...the tribulations!Todd Masonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01815516018079824802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6672923492889685727.post-84681560233164756762012-08-28T05:30:23.449-07:002012-08-28T05:30:23.449-07:00Ironically, I was picking up all my Atlas comics a...Ironically, I was picking up all my Atlas comics at Safeway grocery, where the DC distribution was notoriously spotty. Luckily, very soon after, I discovered that there was a comics store in downtown San Jose so I didn't have to cycle to various Stop N Gos, 7-11s, or Safeways ever again.
