Gaines and Feldstein were inspired to write the story by an anecdote in Bennett Cerf's book "Try and Stop Me", which was also the inspiration for several other EC stories like Shock #2's "The Patriots", Haunt #7's "Room for One More" and others. One such variant appeared in Alvin Schwartz's book "More Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark", a very memorable book for anyone who grew up in the 80's and 90's like I did. Said story features a group of old men in a room with one window; the man next to the window tells his bedridden roommates of all the wonderful things happening outside. One of his roommates grows so jealous of him that he ends up killing him by knocking his roommate's heart medication out of reach. He gets his wish, to be moved to the bed by the window and looks out... only to see a brick wall.

Another was in a story from either Creepy or Eerie, alas I cannot remember the title or issue of the story but seem to recall it being drawn by Ernie Colon. It features a dystopian future society and our hero desperately desires to escape to the "outside". He finally is able to, only to realize that the "outside" is a small area surrounded by an inescapable brick wall.

A fairly memorable issue of Vault of Horror this month in all respects, and I also enjoyed the rather unique nature of Madam Bluebeard.Quiddity99https://www.blogger.com/profile/17809157926893454731noreply@blogger.com
