We are so used to having things go wrong at the end that when they go right we are surprised. I think Robert C. Dennis did a great job of fleshing out the story, especially by building up Klugman's character, who barely rates a mention in the short story. Maybe funny in a very dark way (like so many AHP endings), but still unhappy.
